Special thanks to our photographer for today, Wesley Sulzberger.

The Fingal Valley Festival provided another great race to Mathina and back. Heading out into a solid headwind, the back groups picked up considerable time, with the leaders, being driven by Suze Dowling, Scott Pratt, Linda Sulzberger and Michael Dalton only 4 and a half minutes up at the turn. Not long after a large composite group comprising Simon Ward, Dale Ridgers, Tony Roughan along with the 3 placegetters joined the leaders and set about to head for the finish. The second scratch group only just getting on the tail of the leading bunch, prior to the finishing sprint. In the sprint to the line Phil Stevenson, jumped away with around 500metres to go, only to be overtaken by Terry Clark and Don Lehner. 20 seconds further back, fastest time was taken out by Scott Smith from Matt Sydes.

At our Annual Charity Race Day, where all the entry money plus donations go to Charity with this year’s nominated Charity being Lifeline Tasmania in support of suicide prevention, for which a sum of over $500 was raised. We were lucky to have high quality fields in all grades. Scott Smith followed on from his last start to win A grade from Matt Bernal and Micky Dalton. In B Grade Tim O’Shannessy showed his class in his obviously last ride in B, beating Marty Neu and Craig Woodfall. Others that excelled in their grades were Mark Bugg in C, Andrew Hyland in D and Michael Dalton in E by beating a strong North-Western push from Jayne Grubits-King and Justin Clements

On what was an event packed Sunday, we were fortunate to have quite good numbers in most of the lower grades. A & B raced together with Dave Bingley taking the honours. It was in C Grade where Mark Bugg again proved that he is ready for another promotion with his second consecutive win, this time over Steve Fleming and Scott Watson, while in D Grade Dean Mason recovered after last week’s performance with a great win over Shane Dennis and John Frankling. In E Grade Helen Woodfall just got home from Coen deGier and Olivier Chartrain, and in F Grade Brian Finn won over Ken Parker who put in possibly one of the rides of the day, in driving his bunch to the point of breaking on numerous occasions.

On a course that is only for the ‘hill climbers’ or the ‘very fit’, the placegetters in each grade all came from diminished bunches as the stronger riders created havoc in their grades. In E grade Olivier Chartrain rode away from his group followed by Lia Giovanovits on the outward journey. Neither rider was seen again. In A Grade Scott Smith defeated Mike Walsh, and Gene Finn, while in D Grade the Headlam brothers in Dallas and Paul along with Doug Watts, rode away from some extremely good riders on the hills.

A field of 63 set of in perfect Autumn weather for the 55km Team Daltini Bishopsbourne Bicicletta Cyclo Classicisimo at Bishopsbourne. With the A Grade bunch being numerically outnumbered, they did not need to be held up for around 45 seconds, by Dairy Cattle crossing the road in front of them, this unfortunately put paid to their chances of catching the B Grade bunch, who while riding through the field, also took out fastest time. As the leaders travelled along Elphinstone Road, the B Grade riders hit the front of the race, steadied, then when the climb in Armstrongs Lane came, the leading trio of Ash Flint, Scott Schilg and Darren Cook attacked the 30 strong group and got a break of around 250 metres, which they held to the finish line, with Steve Muir winning the bunch sprint ahead of Sam Pratt and Paul Morgan. To Micky D and his crew of lieutenants, who firstly raised the money, and then came the prizes in the form of a night’s accommodation for 2, plus Meals at the Adina Place Motel Apartments, valued at $200, care of Marty & Kellie Neu, which was won for Fastest Time, plus a $200 voucher for Huon Salmon for a general draw for all in attendance, which was donated by Scott Nolan, plus other donations from Al Birtwhistle and Dane Leedham, and others whose names I do not know.

All we as a club can say is thanks guys, huge respect, you have set a marvellous precedent

On a reasonably demanding course out along Birralee Road, with A & B Grades combined, it was the B Grade riders in Luke Moore and Michael Bailey who upped the tempo initially, this was kept up on the homeward leg with Luke Moore holding a lead of around 100 metres until around 2km from home when Matt Bernal attacked the following group, established a small lead, and was able to hold on for a great win over Matt Sydes. In C Grade Steve Fleming outsprinted Ricky Allan and Bel Flint. Possibly the most remarkable feat of today’s racing was that each of the 5 women racing today, either won, or was placed in their respectiv E Grades.

With just on 50 starters, attack was the order of the day in the leadinG Grades at Whitemore on Sunday, with a constant barrage being played out, Tim Elmer was so close to staying away, but was reeled in just before the line with Mathew Sydes winning and Matt Bernal coming in third. In B Grade Michael Bailey showed his sprinting form from the track season held him in good stead from Peter Oliver and Craig Woodfall. Steve Muir (C), Nigel Housego (D) and Peter Booth (E) each had convincing wins in their respectiv E Grades, while in (F) last weeks placegetters repeated in exactly the same order.

In bitterly cold conditions a field of just on 50, set out with a roaring tail wind, which saw all bunches decimated before the turn (with most groups averaging between 45-50kph). With the quality coming to the fore, punching into the nasty headwind home, it was a final Sprint in A & B Grade between Michael Bailey and Michael Walsh, with the former reigning supreme on this occasion. In C Grade, Ricky Allen kept his form with a good win over returning Roger Butorac and Belamie Flint. In D Grade David Casalegno, broke through, with a win over Brendan Davie and Keith Gibson.

In sub-zero temperatures, 40 starters headed out along Birralee Road for a 49km Graded Mass Start, on the return journey along Selbourne Road, a surprise hill attracted a bit of comment from the unsuspecting riders. At the finish it was once again Michael Bailey who outsprinted Dave Bingley from Ian Leighton to take out the combined A & B Grade. In C Grade Nigel Housego had his first win in this grade over Dale Ridgers from Steve Muir, while in the next 2 grades newer riders cleaned up with Brendan Davies taking out D Grade, and Marcus Cramp and Ross Martin performed well in their first ride in E Grade.

In windy conditions that were far from ideal, the 2 laps of the Cluan Bracknell circuit put all riders to the test, but it was Scott Smith who finally rode away from Mike Walsh and Andy Wells, to take out A grade, while in B grade Michael Bailey has cemented his rise to A, by winning again over Luke Moore and Peter Oliver. Belamie Flint was constantly driving C grade and deservedly won from Simon Ward and Roger Butorac, while in D grade Keith Gibson with a couple of rather big training rides during the week, proved that the hard work paid off, by defeating newcomer Marcus Cramp and John Frankling.

In bleak conditions where the temperature did not get above zero, Luke Moore decided to attack the combined A & B grade field approximately 1km from the finish, and with a break of around 200 metres rounding the last bend, all looked good, until Michael Bailey, jumped from the bunch with Tim O’Shannessey tacked onto his wheel. Now with a slightly uphill finish Tim bided his time, until around 150 metres to go and glided to the finishing line with relative ease. In C grade Grant Astell returning after a long lay-off through injury, showed a great finishing Sprint to defeat Simon Donovan and Simon Ward. In D grade Dean Mason defeated Kristy Grubits and Tim Burford. In E and F grades another couple in Peter Booth and Jen Badcock were both in the winner’s circle.
